Serrans Shower Flowers on Sisters!

Of the numerous disruptions created by the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, one cancellation greatly lamented by the Serra Club of North Columbus is our annual luncheon recognizing the religious sisters of the Diocese. Each Fall we gather at the Martin dePorres Center at St. Mary of the Springs to celebrate with sisters from numerous congregations, with the older sisters from Mohun Health Care Center the most numerous, as they live on the campus. Since we knew we couldn’t hold the luncheon this Fall, we opted to provide some color after the bleak grey of the early lockdown. Serran Ginger West led the delivery effort,  Mohun volunteers planted them, and the sisters now enjoy them!

Serra Clubs of Columbus Extend Ordination Anniversary Greetings

Throughout the year, the Serra Clubs send greetings to the priests of the Diocese of Columbus, wishing them blessings on the anniversary of their ordinations. The effort reaches a peak in May and June, when the vast majority of the ordinations occurred.

Sue Stalter of the Serra Club of North Columbus finds the task enjoyable, especially in that it has reminded to her to send notes to the priests who have accompanied her in her faith journey.

Check the Diocesan directory to find your favorite priests’ anniversaries, and drop them a note of appreciation and congratulations!

Serra Club of North Columbus Vocation Luncheon for Boys

On Tuesday, November 5, 2019, the annual Serra Club of North Columbus Vocation Luncheon for Boys took place at the Jessing Center on the Josephinum Campus. The luncheon was supported by a grant from the Catholic Foundation.

Fr. Ed Shikina, parochial vicar for St. Brendan the Navigator parish, was the keynote speaker. He earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the Pontifical College Josephinum and credited Fr. Paul Noble, Director of Vocations for the diocese of Columbus, for encouraging him in his vocation. He showed the video, Fishers of Men, by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). This film inspired Fr. Shikina to compare vocations to the priesthood to the call to become superheroes—to be someone remarkable and do something remarkable.

Fr. Jeff Rimelspach, Chaplain for the Serra Club of North Columbus, provided the opening and closing prayers for vocations.

Students from St. Brendan the Navigator, St. Brigid of Kildare, St. Pius X, Immaculate Conception, Bishop Ready, and St. Francis de Sales attended the event. They toured the grounds and buildings of the Pontifical College Josephinum after the luncheon.
